Dominos Pizza on the Moon

Dominos Pizza on the Moon The Japanese arm of Domino’s Pizza is planning to open the first pizzeria ever on the moon. As reported in the London Daily Telegraph, this strange marketing stunt is somewhat inspired by 2001′s Pizza Hut mission to the moon, where they became the first to deliver pizza to the International Space Station. Sources have revealed that construction plans are already underway. Domino’s has already reached out to construction company Maeda. They’ve begun drafting blueprints of a potential dome-shaped, lunar pizzeria. The drawings have allegedly included a 28 ft wide  building for the staff to live in. Dominos Pizza on the Moon Spokesperson Tomohide Matsunanga has announced that they had been thinking about this idea for over a year, although it wasn’t clear when the restaurant would actually open. He also stated that it was estimated to cost the company a whopping $21.8 billion. According to their reported research, some 15 rockets would be necessary to transport 70 tons of construction and pizza making material to the site. Matsunanga, on the reasoning behind the bizarre project: “In the future we anticipate, we anticipate there will be many people living on the moon– astronauts who are working there and, in the future, citizens of the moon.” As quirky and funny I think this idea may be, it seems to me that it’s more of a marketing ploy than anything else. Domino’s has made headlines around the world because of its ‘cosmic aspirations’ and that’s got to account for something, right? Dominos Pizza on the Moon I mean, let’s break this down. According to Market Watch, Domino’s net income for 2010 was $88 million. Where are they planning on getting the $21.8 billion from? And how do they expect to make any money in a pizzeria that serves… no-one? The 2001 Pizza Hut stunt was pretty cool– delivering a pizza to the International Space Station is an isolated event that may have cost some cash, but probably not more than a typical marketing campaign. Domino’s lunar pizzeria most likely is an attempt to get the same buzz but I can’t imagine they’ll go through with it– it’s too costly and would be just… silly. Revealing that they have this plan, however, is free marketing. Millions of people have read about Domino’s in the past few days in their favored news source and whether they like it or not are affected by the information. Perhaps it’s just about making the company relevant, or maybe it’s a public display of their sense of humor. Either way I’m sure the story of the moon pizzeria was cooked up in the marketing department. Dominos Pizza on the Moon
